WHAT IS NITROUS SEDATION?

Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as laughing gas, or inhalation sedation, is the mildest form of sedation offered in dentistry today. The mild nature of nitrous oxide should not fool you. This medication is proven to ease anxiety in mildly to moderately nervous patients within moments of delivery. Nitrous oxide sedation is delivered in the form of a gas containing a carefully blended mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists classifies nitrous oxide as minimal sedation. This is because the patient is able to respond normally to verbal or other stimulus, and breathing and cardiovascular functions are unaffected. The sedative takes effect within seconds of inhalation and continues to be effective throughout treatment. As the procedure ends, nitrous is neutralized with oxygen and full alertness is regained.
