Lost Bone Is Rebuildable Bone.

Bone is honest tissue: where it has work to do, it stays; where a tooth root disappears, it leaves. Years after an extraction, gum disease, or denture wear, the ridge that once gripped a tooth can thin to a knife's edge — which is when patients start hearing the dreaded 'not enough bone for implants.'

The team that rebuilds the bone is the team that places the implant.

What that sentence should say is: not enough bone yet. Grafting rebuilds lost volume with proven materials your body converts into its own living bone — turning unbuildable sites into solid foundations.

Just as important: knowing when you can skip it. Guided placement and angled techniques let many patients go straight to implants — and when the upper jaw truly can’t be rebuilt, zygomatic implants bypass the graft entirely. Your scan decides, not a sales script.

Three Kinds Of Rebuild, One Careful Decision

What A Bone Graft Actually Involves

Most grafting falls into three jobs. Socket preservation fills a fresh extraction site the day the tooth comes out — a few extra minutes that prevent the ridge collapse which claims up to half the bone width within a year. It's the cheapest graft you'll ever get, because it stops the loss instead of repairing it.

Ridge augmentation rebuilds width or height where bone left long ago — restoring a foundation thick enough to hold an implant for decades. And sinus augmentation adds bone below the sinus floor for the upper back jaw, where nature gives implants the least to work with — that one earns its own page.

Which job your site needs — or whether it needs none — is measured, not guessed: a free 3D CBCT scan maps your bone to the millimeter, and the doctors walk you through it on screen before a single decision is made.

From Thin Ridge To Rock-Solid Foundation

Grafting here is planned on your CT scan by Masters of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and recommended only when your anatomy genuinely asks for it.

CBCT scan measuring bone volume for graft planning

Step One: Measure What's Really There

Flat X-rays hide the dimension that matters most — width. Your free CBCT scan measures bone height, width, and density in 3D.

The doctors then make the honest call: no graft needed, a simultaneous graft with your implant, or a staged rebuild for heavily resorbed sites.

You'll see your own scan on screen and leave with the plan and its costs in writing.

Step Two: Rebuild With The Right Material

The site is prepared and grafted with the material matched to its job — your own bone, processed donor bone, mineral scaffold, or synthetic — placed and protected so your body can do the real work.

Local anesthesia keeps it comfortable; IV sedation from ACLS-certified doctors is there if you'd rather not remember it.

Where anatomy allows, the implant goes in the same visit — one surgery instead of two.

Step Three: Let Biology Finish The Job

Over the following months, your body replaces the scaffold with living bone — we monitor the integration at follow-ups here, with the same doctors.

When the foundation is ready, your implant is placed with guided precision, and our in-house lab takes it from there — often to permanent teeth within days.

A properly rebuilt foundation is why these implants hold for decades instead of failing early — it's the step patients never see, and the one that matters most.

Rebuilding Bone —What Patients Want To Know First

Do I definitely need a bone graft to get implants?

Quite possibly not — it's worth a second look before you accept one. Many patients, even with some bone loss, qualify for immediate placement because guided navigation lets us use dense bone that freehand surgeons can't safely reach, and angled techniques work around thin areas. We only graft when your anatomy actually needs it — never as a default add-on. Your free 3D CBCT scan measures your bone in three dimensions, and you'll get a straight answer: no graft needed, a small graft placed the same day as your implant, or a staged rebuild for badly resorbed areas.

Where does the graft material come from?

Modern grafting uses several proven sources: your own bone (autograft), processed donor bone (allograft), animal-derived mineral scaffold (xenograft), or synthetic bone substitutes. Each is sterile, extensively regulated, and acts as a scaffold your own body replaces with living bone over the following months. Dr. Sam Jain and Dr. Arpana Gupta select the material based on what your specific site needs, and they'll show you exactly what's being placed and why, in plain terms, before you agree to anything.

Does bone grafting hurt?

Far less than its reputation. Most grafts — especially socket preservation after an extraction — add only minutes to a procedure already underway, under the same local anesthesia, with IV sedation available for anxious patients. Expect mild soreness and swelling for a few days, managed with over-the-counter medication. The dread is almost always worse than the experience.

How long until I can get my implant after grafting?

It depends on the size of the rebuild. Small grafts are often placed simultaneously with the implant — no added wait at all. Larger ridge or sinus rebuilds typically integrate for several months before the implant goes in, because rushing a foundation is how implants fail. Your timeline is mapped on your scan at the free consultation, in writing, before anything starts.

How much does bone grafting cost?

Bone grafting, per site, and a sinus lift are each quoted in writing after the 3D scan — billed only when your scan shows your site actually needs one, never as a default add-on; on an All-on-4 arch, the bone grafting the arch needs is already inside the one fixed, all-included fee. Whatever your plan turns out to be, every line is itemized in writing at your free consultation before anything is scheduled, and our lending partners offer monthly payment plans with a prequalification that doesn't affect your credit score. The full picture of what drives implant pricing lives on our cost page.

My graft from another office failed. Now what?

First, an honest diagnosis: we routinely see patients whose grafts failed from infection, early loading, or asking a graft to do more than grafts can. Sometimes the answer is a properly staged re-graft. Sometimes it's skipping grafting entirely — zygomatic implants anchor in the dense cheekbone and can support fixed teeth when the upper jaw itself has nothing left; zygomatic vs bone grafting compares the two paths honestly. Either way, bring your history; you'll leave with a real plan.

What are the risks, and what can go wrong?

Every surgery carries risk, and the consent form you would read and sign before this treatment names each one. How likely each of these is depends on your health, your anatomy and the treatment planned. Your doctor goes through your own risk level, and the alternatives, at your consultation. You can read the full list now in the Bone Grafting Consent. If an implant ever fails, our failed-implant rescue page explains how it is handled.

I went to Dr Arpana and Dr Sambhav in an emergency requiring extraction of multiple teeth and a dental implant. They accommodated me in their busy schedule and took good care of me. They have the entire setup (3D X-ray, implants, crown etc) and I didn’t have to run to multiple people for my treatment. I was treated very professionally and I felt cared for. Highly recommend them. I referred my family and they have had very positive experience as well. A big thumbs up on the quality of service!

We’re so happy we found Center of Implant Dentistry, we travelled all the way from Las Vegas to the Bay Area specifically for my Dad’s upper implant procedure (after he received some inferior quotes in Nevada that made him uncomfortable) so I did some research and found Dr Jain & Dr Gupta And from the very first visit we were so happy with the experience they were very accommodating and friendly and supportive throughout the whole process. From the very first consultation we knew we found the right place for my dad’s implants, 🤗Center of Implant Dentistry really specialize in all they do and is a full one stop shop, my dad’s experience was super pleasant and the staff was so great, it was easy to book an appt and schedule his procedure, it was so simple, easy and pain free for my Dad, he had a very quick and easy healing process compared to other friends he knows that got the same. We’re overall so happy with Dr Jain and Dr Gupta for their care and appreciate them for accommodating my Dad until he feels his very best and the most confident with his new smile. Highly recommend, we’ll surely be letting his friends know as well 5 stars
