Union City area dentist offers dentistry under sedation
For more and more people, even routine dental visits can cause debilitating anxiety. It is unknown what causes this anxiety and it can stem from various issues. For example, some patients have had negative experiences at the dental office and associate professional care with pain and discomfort. This can cause a patient to avoid seeing the dentist for fear of experiencing this again. Other patients have a fear of the unknown, not sure what will be done to their smile and what to expect. For many patients, they may avoid the dentist because of experiences even other people have had that were less than pleasant. Personal space may be an issue, with some individuals unhappy with someone in their mouth poking and prodding. Whatever the reason, it is important that patients learn about the benefits of sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry is available at the Center for Implant Dentistry in the Union City community. Drs. Sambhav Jain, Shivani Gupta, and Arpana Gupta believe that patients should have a positive experience every time they visit the dental chair. Patients should be relaxed and know that their dental team is there to help bring their smile to health and achieve a more beautiful appearance. However, dental anxiety can be difficult for some patients to overcome and this is when sedation dentistry should be strongly considered.
Sedation dentistry at our practice includes two varieties: IV sedation and oral conscious sedation. IV sedation is a much stronger type of sedation than oral conscious sedation. It administers sedative medication through the bloodstream during the procedure. Patients are monitored by an anesthesiologist who is experienced in providing sedation. IV sedation can make many patients fall asleep, allowing the dentist to perform his or her treatment without interruption while patients are comfortable.
Oral conscious sedation works a little differently. This method uses oral medication that is administered before the appointment. Patients arrange transportation to the Center for Implant Dentistry with a friend or family member. They arrive awake and coherent but completely relaxed. Patients are able to respond to questions, use the bathroom without assistance, and follow instructions during their dental treatment. After arriving home to rest, patients wake up with little to no recollection of their appointment—but their smile will be complete!
