All on 4 Dental Implants Guide: Procedure, Recovery & Costs

What is All-on-four?

All-on-four dental implant is a graftless, cost-efficient solution that provides patients with a fixed full-arch prosthesis on the day of implant surgery. The process involves immediately loaded fixed cross arch dental prosthesis supported by four implants: Two anterior straight implants and two tilted posterior implants.

Traditional Implants

Traditional implants require several surgical procedures. During an initial dental implant procedure, the implants are placed within the jawbone.  Once the implants are placed, the bone in your jaw takes between three and six months for your gum to heal. After the implants are integrated with the jawbone, it acts as a replacement for the missing tooth root. During the second surgery following the placement of the implant, an abutment (a small metal post) is attached to the dental implant. This abutment will be attached to the implant restoration.

Characteristics:

    • Traditional implants require more implants, as many as ten implants to secure per arch and might need 20 implants on both lower and upper arches
    • Patients would require more bone grafting and sinus augmentation to replace the jaw bone
    • Traditional dentures are placed with messy pastes, powders or adhesive pads and are prone to slipping along the gums, causing discomfort or irritation.
  • Patients will need more expensive prosthetics and should be prepared for the additional treatment time and cost

Why All-on-4 is a better option than traditional implants

For patients who are missing the top row of teeth or both top and bottom rows of teeth, dental implants are a better option compared to conventional methods of replacing lost teeth. Traditional dentures have several disadvantages and cause discomfort and inconvenience.

All-on-four is a premier implant treatment for replacing a full set of teeth on the upper or lower arch of the mouth with less than half the implants needed in traditional implant dentistry. The two adjacent dental implant fixtures in All-on-Four are tilted up to 45° in the posterior to support the dental prosthetics.

Features

    • Placement of dental implants with minimum absolute intrusion and accurate diagnosis and proper treatment planning
    • Eliminates the need for oral bone graft surgery by tilting of posterior implants
    • Posterior implants are placed distally and angled to maximize the bone-to-implant ratio
    • Ability to be implanted and fitted in three days
    • Implants will not slip or shift out of place
    • Substantial reduction in All-on-4 implant treatment and recovery times
  • Patients get a complete, gorgeous smile

What’s the All-on-4 dental implant fitting procedure like?

The first step in the All-on-four dental implant procedure is to schedule a consultation with your dentist. During this consultation, you’ll get dental x-rays, diagnostic procedures and surgical techniques to assess your suitability for implants.  The dentist will look at your records, existing conditions and identify exactly how much bone needs to be placed for implant insertion. Second, the dentist will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves a tooth or teeth extraction. Your dentist will offer you local anesthesia to make you comfortable during the procedure. After they extract your remaining teeth, your mouth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any damaged tissue and bacteria from your jaw and gums. Next, the implantation process will begin. The dentist drills holes for placing the screw-shaped titanium implants in the jawbone. They will put two implants at the front of your jaw and two implants at the rear of your mouth so they can stay in place.

Get a new smile in three days

Once the placement of the implant is completed, they will thoroughly clean your mouth, and any incisions are sutured. You’ll be fitted with your new teeth in three days. Some dentists create a temporary denture at this stage, which puts less force or stress on your dental implants to heal and fuse to your jawbone. You’ll have to wait for two to six months before replacement teeth can be attached to the implant. Once that happens, you’ll get a permanent, perfect, fully customized smile crafted just for you.

All-on-4 dental implants recovery time

Unlike traditional dentures where the healing time can range from 3 to 8 months, with All-on-4 denture, you should be functioning after a while. During this time, the implants integrate into the bone structure and become stable from the very first day.

Patients usually experience some swelling, bleeding, bruising and discomfort in the days after their surgery. You’ll probably need a few days after surgery to recover fully and get used to your new teeth. Your dental will instruct you on the type of foods you will be able to eat in the months after your treatment. For 2-3 months, you’ll have to eat a soft or liquid diet, so you don’t disturb the stability of the implants.  Your dentist will strongly advise you to quit smoking and excessive exercises for a few days after surgery. You should clean All-on-4 implants by brushing and flossing once daily just like your regular teeth. Your dentist will explain to you the best way to floss your teeth with special appliances or suggest a water flosser to clean around implants.

How much does All-on-4 dental implant cost?

The cost of All-on-4 dental implants can vary depending on the number of implants you need and the appropriate material used after careful consideration of wear, durability and maintenance.

Acrylic or Composite All-on-4 dental implants

All-On-4 implant involves the use of acrylic resin base built with a titanium framework. You need to replace the implant every 5 to 8 years as a result. The acrylic composite option is only slightly cheaper, it can cost between $20,000 and $30,000.

Porcelain All-on-4 Dental Implants

Dentures made of porcelain are more quiet, and can look more natural and long-lasting than acrylic. You have to spend an additional $5,000 per jaw for porcelain dentures. The whole dental implant procedure and dentures could end up paying between $25,000 and $35,000. Replacing a broken porcelain denture can cost roughly $15,000.
